IPG Photonics’ LightWeld XR delivers high energy density to penetrate thick materials

IPG Photonics has launched the LightWeld XR hand-held laser welding and cleaning system with an expended variety of capabilities to address more materials and thicknesses than previous models in the line.

The new version produces a much smaller spot size to deliver more than six times the energy density. This change allows for weld penetration of thicker materials while minimizing the HAZ and reducing distortion or deformation of the surrounding surface area, according to the company. It handles steel and aluminum up to 0.250 in., titanium and nickel alloys up to 0.200 in., and copper up to 0.080 in.

Precleaning removes grease, oils, rust, and excessive oxide coatings from materials. Postweld cleaning removes soot, weld-related debris, and discoloration without abrasives or grinding.
