Magna develops thermoplastic rear swing doors for Volkswagen

Magna has developed thermoplastic rear swing doors that are 20% to 30% lighter than traditional steel doors for the all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz.

The thermoplastic resin material not only reduces vehicle weight but also gives vehicle designers freedom for sharper detailing, undercut surfaces, and tighter radii. The spoiler now is integrated into the swing doors, which reduces cost, creates a cleaner appearance, and helps improve vehicle aerodynamics.

With the current trend towards EVs, some analysts project the thermoplastic liftgate market could grow up to 15% by 2028, Magna reports.
