The new Stellram® 5230VS12 chevron-style milling cutter from ATI Stellram, LaVergne, Tenn., machines titanium and other difficult-to-machine materials, such as nickel- and cobalt-based alloys.
This cutter can position multiple inserts along the cutting edge of each helical flute. This insert placement design provides smooth, progressive penetration and cutting action for extended tool life; lower power consumption; and improve surface finish up to 30 percent, the company reports.
Cutter diameters are from 2.5 to 4.0 in., with four to six flutes available. Depending on flute length, from six to 14 inserts can be positioned along the flutes. Individual coolant jets to each insert provide constant chip evacuation and temperature stability in the cutting zone.
Two insert grades are available.
