Iscar Tools reports that its new milling cutters can improve productivity on limited-feed machines and in heavy roughing applications. They also enable moderate ramping and side plunging.
These Moderate Feed (MF) cutters are the latest addition to the HELIDO line of milling tools, which feature helical cutting edges on the inserts.
These cutters handle depths of cut up to 3.5 mm, which is 75 percent deeper than the company’s Fast Feed HELIDO mills. This means that even at slower feeds, they can remove stock faster. On a stainless steel test part, for instance, an MF cutter running at full depth removed material 10 percent faster than a Fast Feed mill, despite feeding 33 percent slower. At equal chip loads, the new MF cutter doubled the removal rate.
The cutter body features dovetailed insert clamping. Double-sided, trigon-shaped inserts provide six edges each to reduce tooling costs. To minimize cutting forces and protect the tool and the workpiece, the cutting edges feature a helical curve to cleave off the metal, like scissors cutting paper.
Five sizes are available from 50 to 125 mm. Two cutting edge insert configurations also are offered: type HP for general-purpose service and type T for stainless steel and superalloys.
