Sunnen's new HTD tube honing system has a 52-ft. stroke and can handle up to39-in.-diameter parts.
An electronically controlled, 40.23-HP spindle motor powers stock removal that can reach 150 in.3/hr. in applications such as the honing of helicopter driveshafts, marine driveshafts, submarine periscopes, downhole oil drilling components, cannon barrels, bimetallic tubes, and hydraulic cylinders.
The machine is designed to correct bore geometry and size errors, as well as produce specific surface finishes and crosshatch angles to ensure correct sliding/sealing surfaces between mating parts. The machine has a Windows®-based controller that controls bore geometry with functions for stroke position, motion, stone feed, and cutting pressure.
The honing system is particularly suited for controlling taper variation and drift in long bores. It can use double and triple-banked tools, which have up to triple the abrasive length of ordinary tools. Available abrasives include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, CBN, and diamond honing stones.
