Haas SS-30 and ST-30

Haas Automation has created a pair of new turning centers using digital design and analysis tools.

All castings of the Haas SS-30 and ST-30 turning centers were designed using finite element analysis (FEA) to produce a rigid machine, while at the same time improving chip and coolant flow and simplifying maintenance and service.

The spindle heads feature a compact, symmetric design for thermal stability and rigidity, and according to Haas, the 45-degree wedge design increases the tool-mounting envelope and improves chip flow. Both machines feature an A2-6 spindle nose with a 3.5-in. bore and a 10-in. hydraulic chucking system. Standard bar capacity is 3 in.

The SS-30 is equipped with a 24-station hybrid BOT/VDI turret that indexes tools in 0.5 sec. The machine provides a maximum cutting capacity of 16 in. by 26 in., with maximum swings of 31.75 in. over the front apron and 20.75 in. over the cross slide. The machine’s 30-HP, vector dual-drive spindle spins to 4,800 RPM. On-the-fly, wye-delta switching yields a wide constant-horsepower band for constant surface feed cuts. Rapids are 1,200 IPM on the Z axis and 945 IPM on the X axis.

The ST-30 is equipped with a 12-station BOT turret and has a maximum cutting capacity of 21 in. by 26 in. Maximum swings are the same as the SS version, and the rapids are 945 IPM on both axes.

The standard 30-HP spindle spins to 3,400 RPM. For heavy cutting operations, an optional two-speed gearbox can be used.

Standard equipment on both the SS-30 and ST-30 includes rigid tapping, a 15-in. color LCD monitor, and a USB port.
