HMC for Hard Metals

April 28, 2011

Mitsui Seiki’s new HU100A-5XLL

horizontal machining center
(HMC) can machine large, complex hard-metal parts weighing up to 6,600 lbs.

This machine has an X, Y, Z working envelope of 98.4 by 68.9 by 55.1 in. The A and B tilting and rotating trunnion table axes are the fourth and fifth axes of motion.

The standard spindle offering is 50 taper, although manufacturers performing heavy roughing in titanium and tough-to-cut steels can opt for the HSK 100 or HSK 125 spindle with higher torque.

The machine has a pallet size of 66.9 by 39.4 in. The automatic toolchanger holds 360 tools with lengths up to 19.6 in., diameters to 12 in., and weights of 66 lbs.

The machine’s structure was created using 3-D finite element designing. The castings are hand-scraped, and the machine has hardened and ground steel boxways.
