Thirty years ago Doosan Infracore (originally Daewoo) opened its doors in North America for the distribution, sales, and service of a family of machine tools, known then and now as Puma turning centers.
In its first year, the company offered the DSN20 – a two-axis, NC lathe with a Fanuc 6T controller. Features included a 20-HP, 2,000-RPM spindle drive; quick-change Aloris tool posts; and rapid traverses that topped out at 400 IPM.
Much has changed during the past three decades. The name changed in 2005 from Daewoo to Doosan Infracore, and the line of machines grew from a single NC lathe to more than 60 horizontal turning centers and mill/turns, 35 vertical and horizontal machining centers, plus boring mills and vertical turning centers.
The sales and service network now numbers more than 50 distributors located throughout North, Central, and South America, and Doosan itself has become one of the Western Hemisphere’s three largest machine tool suppliers.
Looking ahead, Doosan will exhibit a selection of turning centers and machining centers in the front row of IMTS 2010.
