Situation
True Gear & Spline, Cambridge, Ont., needed to grind larger gears with much higher tolerance and increased speed to expand its services to customers in the machinery, mining, energy, oil and gas, and prototyping sectors.A family business established in 1974 by Vinko Bizjak Sr., True Gear & Spline originally ran operations from a 1,200-sq.-ft. industrial warehouse and performed primarily hobbing and shaving. After 1980 it moved down the street to progressively larger facilities, ending in a 12,000-sq.-ft. shop in 1997.
In 2008 the company became ISO 9001-certified, and today it serves a worldwide customer base from its 20,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility.
In 1998 the company purchased a NILES ZSTZ 315 gear grinder, which still is in operation. To meet new customer demands for larger gears, the company needed to add CNC gear profile grinding to its machining capabilities.
Resolution
Historically, True Gear & Spline created gears to AGMA Class 8 and Class 10. Now gears of AGMA 11 and 12 quality are routinely achieved with the addition of a NILES ZP 12 gear grinder from Machine Tool Systems, Toronto.
“Continued growth and investing in the latest technology has always been a driving force at True Gear & Spline,” said Vice President Mark Bizjak, who has worked alongside his father since high school. “This latest purchase is in keeping with our commitment to accommodate our customers with any type of gear.”
True Gear’s NILES ZP 12 allows it to grind internal and external gears up to 1.2 m in diameter. Dual dressers reduce dressing time, and gear inspection also takes place on the machine. New software makes worm grinding possible as well.
“We have had our ZSTZ 315 in production for close to 20 years and look forward to many more years of using the advanced technology offered by the ZP 12 machine,” said Bizjak.
